Frequently asked questions
Most questions about Provenance are really questions about recording, privacy, and who decides — so that's what this page covers. Written for students first, but faculty and administrators ask most of these too.
Is my review session recorded?
Yes. A session captures audio, a transcript, timestamps, and references to the parts of your submission being discussed. The recording is the point of the review: it's the evidence of how you explained your own work, available for your instructor to review rather than reconstructed from memory.
Who can see my recording and transcript?
Your instructor, and authorized staff at your institution under its policies — the same way other coursework and grades are handled. Review records are educational records, and access to them is controlled and logged.
How long is my session kept?
Retention follows your institution's agreement with Provenance Learning and your institution's own records policies. For how deletion requests work, see the privacy policy or write to privacy@provenancelearning.ai.
Does the AI decide my grade?
No. AI assistance drafts questions for your instructor's approval, transcribes the session, and compares answers against the instructor's criteria — with multiple independent evaluators, so disagreement between them is visible rather than hidden. Your instructor reviews that evidence and makes the final decision, and can adjust or override any of it.
Is Provenance an AI detector? Does it decide whether I cheated?
No. Provenance does not detect AI use, does not score your honesty, and does not make misconduct determinations. It records a structured explanation of your own work so your instructor has real evidence to interpret. If a review raises questions, those go through your institution's normal academic processes, with humans making the judgments.
Does Provenance recognize me by my voice?
No. Provenance does not create voiceprints and does not use speaker recognition. Audio is recorded and transcribed as evidence of what was said in your session — it is not used to biometrically identify anyone.
What does the system note about how I speak?
The record may include observational delivery annotations — for example, that a pause occurred or an answer was restarted. They are strictly observational: nothing in the record interprets your confidence, anxiety, or intent, and a hesitant answer is not treated as an admission of anything.
I'm nervous about speaking. Is that held against me?
The review is a conversation about work you've already done, not a performance. Pausing to think is expected, and pace is not a criterion. If speaking assessments are difficult for you, talk to your instructor or your institution's accessibility office about accommodations before your session.
What happens if my connection drops mid-session?
Tell your instructor what happened, and write to support@provenancelearning.ai with your institution, course, and roughly when it happened. Instructors can see where a session was interrupted, and an interrupted session is a technical event, not a mark against you.
